Ten-thirty in a filthy room
M1 rumbling on its endless way to nowhere
Forty-five quid blown on some kind of dream
She sleeps
I lie on the “family” bed
Snot-encrusted wall by my head
Haunt of nose-picking lonely men
This is it then
The night of our escape
Unfinished snacks on the table
Surprise summer heat and sweat
No sound but the lost roar of tyres on asphalt
She sleeps
I try to ignore the snot and pour another drink
