I hoped to see a star

I hoped to see a star that night;
one single star that twinkled bright
but all the sky was thick with clouds
that smothered starlight in their shroud.

 

But then, through darkness, deep, I heard
sweet, happy songs of gentle birds
and each one, like a star, divine
appeared to sparkle and to shine.
