Rhiannon, as a matter of fact I think some of Carol Ann's work is very good and I probably share many of her views. It was the structure of the clerihew that led me astray as it is very hard to rhyme 'laureate!'

Overall I agree with your comments concerning anger and obscurity. I also think that to some extent modern fiction has lost its way, and modern poetry also though maybe less so. In my opinion good quality non-fiction eg Radio 4 Book of the week  is in a healthier condition and can be more interesting to read or to listen to.

Boy! Do I remember Ringo and his brilliant reading of Thomas and Friends. One of my favourites to watch with my son.

I enjoyed much watching them, and listening to Ring's telling the tale, too, Jenny. We already had the books from my older children, born before the films. My younger son was quite puzzled when he visited his Grandad and asked to see 'Thomas' on the TV, to be told he didn't have a video player - he gave in not long afterwards! Rhiannon
