Tears stream from Aleppo;
blood sunken, shattered city;
scarred and ruined, scattered lives
while monolithic men,
with stone hearts watch;
unshaken by bodies buried in rubble,
unshocked by children crying and bleeding;
the bullet slaughter of families fleeing
or orphans with shellhole eyes
blood sunken, shattered city;
scarred and ruined, scattered lives
while monolithic men,
with stone hearts watch;
unshaken by bodies buried in rubble,
unshocked by children crying and bleeding;
the bullet slaughter of families fleeing
or orphans with shellhole eyes
Day and night those stone men strived
to pound a cities heart to dust;
to pulverize its dreams of freedom
but though their houses can be shattered;
though bodies can be broken;
spirits are harder to break
and from the body of Aleppo
pours out three thousand souls
that are not broken yet.
to pound a cities heart to dust;
to pulverize its dreams of freedom
but though their houses can be shattered;
though bodies can be broken;
spirits are harder to break
and from the body of Aleppo
pours out three thousand souls
that are not broken yet.

Good poem, appropriate to the catastrophe of a modern city reduced to this. No compromise seems possible, on all sides, but why not?
