The Origin Of The Pied Piper

Long ago, on the streets of Kabul in old Afghanistan there lived a lowly snake charmers son named Allahan who inherited his late fathers pipe and snake but, sadly, not his ear for music.
Allahan was a terrible snake charmer, infact he was so bad that whenever he played his charmers pipe the snake, rather becoming charmed, would just get very angry and sometimes it would even, coiling itself up like a spring, leap out of its basket and try to bite people.
And one day, unfortunately, while Allahan was playing quite out of tune upon his pipe a visier of the Sultan was passing by and Allahans playing was so bad that it made the snake leap up and bite the visier upon his pointed nose.
And the visier shouted, angrilly, as he tried to pull the snake off of his nose, "Arrest that snake charmer. I'll have him made into a shish-kebob and roasted over a fire for this".
Fortunately, Allahan was a much better street magician than he was a snake charmer and he quickly performed a disappearing act before the visiers men could arrest him.
But because the visier was so angry with him he had to flee the city and did not know where he could go.
So he wandered through the countryside like an itinerant musician, trying, inspite of his bad playing to earn his money from his music.
And then, one day, as he wandering, he sat down on a rock outside a cave to rest.
And as he was sitting upon the rock he heard a terribly loud rattling and hissing sound, like a pit full of rattlesnakes, but then, looking round at the cave behind him, he realised that it was not merely snakes he could hear for then he saw a giant many headed rattlesnake come slithering out of the cave.
Terrified, Allahan hid, crouching behind the rock he had been sitting on.
But then, while he was hiding, looking at his snake charmers pipe, Allahan had an idea and, starting to play upon his pipe, he tried to charm the many writhing heads of the giant snake.
Unfortunately, Allahans playing was so bad and so out of tune that, rather than charming the snake heads, he only made them angry. 
But then, because they were so angry, the snake heads started to fight each other, biting each other with their poisonous jaws or, as they wrestled each other, becoming tied up in knots while others, their gorgon stares meeting, turned each other to stone.
And, finally, when every head upon the snake monster was killed, its rattling tail becoming silent aswell, the beast flopped down dead.
But then, to Allahans amazement, he saw an old man come out of the cave who wore robes and a turban that were dark blue and covered in shiny silver moons and stars.
"Who are you?", asked Allahan.
"A wizard who had been turned to stone by that hissing monster", said the old man pointing to the giant snake, "And who had been stuck in that cave for centuries without any hope of escape until you saved me with your flute playing".
And the wizard was so grateful to Allahan that he said he would grant him a wish.
 "Ask anything, my friend", he said, "And it shall be yours".
Allahan thought for a moment and then he said,
"Well. I would like to be able to play the flute well. Aswell as my father did so I could be as good a snake charmer as him. Could you make me a good flute player?".
The wizard beamed broadly.
"I'll do better than that", he said, "I'll make you play so well that you'll be able to charm any living creature. Even the angels will descend from heaven to listen to you play".
And that is how Allahan became the greatest charmer of them all, known throughout the world by another name, the Pied Piper.
