Trailing behind (age 7?)

“I wonder how long it will be?
I don’t think they feel it like me –
their legs are so long, and they go on and on
they know where they’re going – I hope –
and point out the view – is it new?
I trail along, and look for an interesting stick
… Oh, No!, here’s a dog running up, will he lick
my face? ugh, Mum come here, come quick! …
This seems some nice mud to poke with my twig
make patterns and draw, scratch and dig
… They’re waiting and calling again, I must trot
and catch up – we come walking – exploring – a lot
because Dad has to work in our home …
my brother and Mum love to roam
looking for birds and flowers whatever the season
which can be quite nice, so I s'pose there's a reason,
and I tag along, wondering how long
it will be …
oh now we’ve got back to the car
… but where is my monkey? it was in my pocket
it must have dropped out, we must go back
and get it
but, they say that I'd said it was such a long way …
well yes … my brother runs back, but nor far
and they both say they’re sorry,
but we’ve got to get into the car
now, go home …
and leave him behind?
… maybe later someone else will go by and find
little monkey lost …
they say he cost
just 50p …”
based on memories of mother and son of incidents about 23 years ago!
