Westope Wood Hill

Steep up the hill
’til reach the woody crown,
and see so far;
stop and stare,
let your eyes take their fill;
stroll round the wood to the gate
for ‘Wyche Way’ and up through the
cool of the trees, winding paths
of soft damp earth to the
wheat field with swallows
darting and swooping over the crop
and the nearby grassy field
– how many insects
needed to fuel their fly-catching flights?

What a wonderful poem
What a wonderful poem describing such an amazing view Rhiannon, then you take us the reader with you through the cool of those trees, that give great shade.
Very much enjoyed your poem. Those photos are superb too, wish I could take pictures like that, but sadly don't own a camara anymore or a mobile. I do enjoy holding onto memories though.
Hope you get to go on many more walks like this in the future. Thanks for sharing.
Jenny.

Hi Rhiannon,
Hi Rhiannon,
Lovely poem. It is funny what you say about the insects fuelling their fly catching flights. I was just thinking the other day about woodlice: really their only part in the great cycle of things is to be eaten by birds. Such is the wonder of creation!

I liked the contrast between
I liked the contrast between your labours against gravity to get to the top of the hill and "fill" your eyes with the huge view, and the swallows', who are in the view and seeming to move without gravity, but also working to fill themselves, but with lots of tiny gnats :0)
