Wedding Day

The rainbows reflected in the lake
And everything around us was blue, green, and bright
Small explosions of all the people we love kept coming
Wave after wave
Popping through the entrance
Spilling along the shingled path, over the grass, down to the water
Alight with smiles and with laughter
The wind was dancing through the streamers
While the sun got higher and higher
And my heart kept rising to match

The kids' cameras clicked, stopped, clicked
Prosecco flowed and canapés came and went
Then suddenly it was evening
Our vows, the speeches
The tight grip of emotion on my throat
Love burning and blazing through my stomach and heart
The day exactly as we thought it would be
And you standing opposite me
Food we almost forgot to eat
Then the band starting up, people getting to their feet

Late into the night, you sang me a song
Your heart wide open
Luminous, shining
And people sang along
The kids were dancing
Outside, the lanterns were burning
Light was spilling from the windows onto the grass
The lakes were dark, quiet and still
And I didn’t think I could love you more
