I love my job. I have done the same job for twenty-eight years. I get to know the regulars. It is not very often I see a new face, unless they have move in from outside the area.
Most people I meet, they are lovely, each with their own personalities, and ways, of all ages. I see the very young and the very old. Some say, “Good morning,” When they see me, others say, “Thank you,” When they are about to leave me. There is usually no time for chit chat.
I love people watching, I never tire of it.
Today was like any other, I had just let them off, near the Old Place of John Whitegift girls’ school, when it happened.
I saw one of the girls, she had just been stabbed! I stopped my bus and got off, I raced over and held her, there was blood gushing out of her neck, me and another lady held the pressure at her neck, to try and stop the flow of blood. No time for gloves!
There was screaming and pandemonium all around us, everything had happened SO fast! It didn’t seem real, but it was.
This was my worst nightmare. This year alone, four of my colleagues had, left their jobs, for they didn’t feel safe anymore driving their buses.
Why did he do it? What could have been so bad? Why, carry a knife, if it isn’t to do harm? The lad he looked SO young!
So many lives now ruined because of his selfish act, the lad, what would his family be thinking, when they find out what he has done? Mine, the lady helping me, I didn’t even get her name, we would need counselling. I can’t get those screams out of my head and her face, as she looked at me. The police and ambulance service, they had all arrived SO quickly, but sadly this child, died in my arms.
Her poor family. May her young soul rest in peace.
