So what is a woman?

 

Vulnerable by biological design,

acknowledged international war crime

 

suppressed, repressed,

same worth as Kine.

 

Begetting, begetting,  begetting

                                                  tears,

                                                           orphans,

                                                                         widowers.

 

Bearers of hollow-eyed blossoms of rape,

unloved, some loved, some suckled in hate

 

bedded down in land laid to waste.

 

Alive is good,

                     still alive

but her dead constrict her heart.

 

Is this woman.

A stark and painful image of womanhood. You capture the cyclical nature of violence, loss, and survival with visceral language—“hollow-eyed blossoms of rape,” “orphans, widowers,” and the repeated “begetting” convey a history of suffering passed down through generations.

There’s a sense of inevitability to it, as though the weight of history has formed a kind of inheritance for women that cannot be easily discarded. I find it hard to read. It's not a world I want to accept exists.

...of warfare changes, gives a greater capacity to harm and destroy over larger areas and from a distance, but some things have ever been a truly personal violation, in any conflict throughout history.  It is hard to dwell on.Thank you Caldwell for a very thoughtful and considered reading.

Terrible yes, but surely at times it is the women who are privilaged? Can't think of anything right now. Maybe because the get a "women's day"?

I watched a 2023 film the other night called Woman of the Hour set in 70s LA. Though it's about a serial killer targeting women, it's actually a study on outdated attitudes towards women in general and unfortunately, there is evidence that these attitudes are still alive and well today - outside of warfare and heightened scenarios generally.  For me, it highlights the persistent struggle against ingrained societal attitudes towards women, revealing a deep-rooted tension between progress and backlash. Despite the surface appearance of progress in media representation and public discourse, there remains a strong, often reactionary opposition to movements like feminism and social justice, showing that the fight for true equality is far from over. My mum taught me to be a feminist and I wear that badge with pride.

This made me think of women refugees in Sudan talking on the news recently. Everyone in the gathering had been raped. The reporter asked why no one of them had mentioned it, and one by one, they said that no one cared
