You are not and have never been a breathing person to
me?
A set of disconnected events, permanently seared into my
mind
and plucked from an incredulous story spanning a dozen
years.
Like the time?
?face upturned, you illuminated the night with your smile (in
a secret that you shared only with the stars)
?of a spontaneous trembling exchange of token gifts
(treasures long lost)
?of many nights, lulled to sleep on your faltering
disembodied voice (more exhaustion than comfort)
?that squirrel you teased and charmed re-treated empty-handed
(a skill perfected on me)
?you lay your head on my lap, in response to something I
said, and looked at me askance (well?)
?the crunch of that crisp apple on a beach, a description
whose tang I could not help but taste a thousand miles away (and still
do)
?, that last time, of a shared miraculous vision (now
seemingly mundane)
So when we stand and look across the floor now?
The sixth time in this long and torturous affair,
It is once again the moments in between that matter
most;
Huge chasms that cannot be breached in these few
steps.
We both have known this, and have risked knowing it
again.
Resigned.. and inevitable pain notwithstanding? I cannot help but
wonder what blistering memories will be added to my collection this
time(and yours too)
