Let the Night Fall

Sky spaded with a thick mortar
My mind shaded with a melancholy hue
Drifting thoughts scrape the ethereal ceiling
Let the night fall
Sun's Golden globe now bleeds into a flaming shawl
My half-digested lunch, a raging inferno, seeks a spout
Yet the Day's congealing gases linger on
Let the night fall
My half-read newspaper now a crumpled mass
Coffee mug half full, with rusted ring, and a dated smell
Cotton shirt a wrinkled shroud, stained tie, pant pleats enfolded
Let the night fall
Last whiff of evaporating cologne, deodorant
dried, curdled around burning armpits
Heated pavement steams foul sulfur odor
Let the night fall
Rush hour, the muffled sigh of cars sings traffic dirge
blaring radios-- shrill traffic bulletins, jarring rap vibrates
Motorists teem from entrance ramps, demanding their space
Let the night fall
Arriving at home, raucous kids, unruly pets line the streets
Inside, supper vigil begins, family re-gurges day's events
Afterward, I retire to my study, pull down the blinds and
Let the night fall
