Not skilled marksmen-
experienced militiamen,
or settler-seasoned hunters
just opportunistic patriots
hearing the call of duty
abhorring the rise of tyranny

Herded into makeshift barracks
quickly trained in the art of war
flung to fields far and wide
without thought of life or limb
storming beaches, cities
cleansing the tide of tyranny

Not seamstresses by trade
nor skilled in any other craft
homemakers and mothers
hearing the call of duty
abhorring the rise of tyranny

Trimming her family's sustenance-
rationing coupons, meatless days
striding male, assembly lines
producing munitions, uniforms
a noble cause to support

Not politicians or statesmen
or newspaper columnists
producers and actors-
propagandists of surrealism
hearing the call of duty
abhorring the rise of tyranny

Using their artistic talents, writers
appending War Shorts, News bulletins
to their fictive films, actors
performing before troops near and far
to cheer the fighters of tyranny

Thanks for commenting, Rhiannon. I was specifically referring to the American people pulling together in WWII, but it could be extended to countries battling through similar hardships.
