Break Ups Are Confusing

You asked me what it was like when you left
and I told you it was confusing
You didn’t understand what that meant
but it was the best I could
Breaking up was like a comma splice
between two nouns
The first being ‘you’
The second being 'it’
As in 'it’s not you, it’s me’
It sounds right and it even sort of looks right
but it’s not
And I knew the words coming out of your mouth
weren’t either
Breaking up was confusing
because while you said the right things
for me to believe you
There were context clues that didn’t add up
to an accurate statement
Like the way you called me darling every night
because I told you it was my favorite word
And your abrupt willingness to tell me
things you’ve never told anyone
Breaking up was confusing
because despite those things,
You refused to tell me you loved me
and you kept saying
you hate to talk about your feelings
and it’s better if you don’t
Breaking up was confusing
because you said you couldn’t handle me anymore
and that I deserve so much better
But moments later you passive aggressively made a blog post
about how much you hate me
It’s confusing
because you act like you don’t care
but you keep coming back
You expect me to just forgive you
and leave it in the past
Then again, why wouldn’t you?
I always do. I always will.
Breaking up was confusing
because I knew it was temporary
and breaking up implies
the pieces can’t fit back together
the way we always do
