What Are You Afraid Of?

You see poems that you think are for you
but you can’t be sure because
the words seem slanted

but the hurt is so real
you remember causing it
and now you hurt too

He doesn’t look like you
or sound like you
but he hurts her like you did 
so it must somehow be you

and you realize you don’t like being
the villain in her story 
But you can’t stop because
you can’t let these feelings continue

They are suffocating you 
and your suppression of emotions
suffocates her 

but it is easier to tell yourself that
sometimes there is a time and place 
to be evil

Like when staring into her hopeful eyes
because she wants something
you’re scared to give her

So you turn away and hope she takes
that as an answer

She won’t.

She is too stubborn for her own good
but she does it to help you

You are an addict
and you don’t want her help

You want to stay miserable
because it is familiar
and hope is an evil disguised 
as a good thing

You are smarter than that
You know that loving her 
can only hurt you both

Because she will love you
ask you how your day was
and actually care
