The Z Project

Her fingers started to move. The heart rate monitor started to beep. Her eyes blinked open. She looked around the room. She saw the blue plate with the blue dragons her mother always believed brought good luck. She found that to be comforting. However, after a quick surveillance, she realized that she does not know where she is. A wave of panic passed through her.

 

“Hello, is anyone there,” She screamed.

 

No response. She can’t seem to remember how she got here nor what happened before this time, moment, and place. She removed all the wires attached to her body and started to walk around the hospital repeating the same question in a less frantic manner.

 

“Hello, is anyone there,” She said.

 

The hospital was all white and had a certain cleanliness to it. The beds in the room were neatly spread with a white bed sheet and blue blanket. Across the wall was a sign that said, “welcome to Belize Hospital.”  She realized that the hospital was clean yet there was no one in sight. After looking around the hospital and not finding anyone. She decided to leave the hospital. Before nearing the hospital door, she tripped over a bunch of cords and landed on a monitor screen. A hologram was presented before her.  

 

“My name is Doctor Victor Heights. I am the lead doctor for the Z project. If you are receiving this hologram that means the Z project has failed. You are in the year 2022. Meaning, humanity as we know it has come to an end. If I may presume, you are Alicia Pierce. You are a very vital component needed to restore all of humanity. You have to find……I am sorry my energy is…..”

 

The hologram ended.

 

She couldn’t believe she was in the year 2022. The last date she remembered was May 17, 2015. How did she end up in the year 2022 without any recollection she wondered aloud?

“Doctor, do you think she is going to be okay” Mrs. Pierce said.

 

“I am sorry Mr. and Mrs. Pierce your daughter has a rare form of an immune system disorder,” the doctor said. “I am not exactly sure how your daughter’s body will respond to the virus going around.” The doctor said.

 

“Already, her body is already getting weaker with each day” Mrs. Pierce continued. “Have you given her the vaccine.”

 

“I am so sorry to inform you but her body will not take well to the vaccine” the doctor continued. “I am going to perform the emergency intervention program.”

 

“The government cleared her before the Z project even started” Mrs. Pierce said. “How is it her body is not going to take well to the vaccine.”

“Something went wrong, her body will attack the vaccine at such a rapid rate that she will not be protected against the virus,” the doctor continued.

 

“When will she wake up,” Mr. Pierce asked.

 

“I believe after the proper procedures and protocols are taken, she will wake up in the year 2022” the doctor continued.

 

“Okay, doctor we are leaving our child in your capable hands,” Mr. Pierce said.

“We have to abort the Z project” General lee said.

 

“It is too late” Dr. Heights said.

 

“What have we done” ………This could be the end to humanity as we know it. Is there a solution or a remedy to this” General lee said?

 

“Sir, we have had our best scientists working on a solution for months and the best they could come up with is to let our faith rely on Alicia Pierce. Since her body has not been affected by the vaccine, she is the only one that can perform the reversal process. I will try to put things in place for her but I don’t know how far I will get. The vaccine is slowing my body down. Already, most of the population is asleep. Even, the world officials are asleep. While I work on the reversal process, you have to start moving the bodies into the hibernation pods. Humanity will not survive seven years on its own,” Dr. Heights said.

 

“Dr. Heights…..you have to fix this.” General lee said. “If I would have known this will happen, I never would have pushed for the Z project.”

 

“Sir, I will try my best,” Dr. Heights responded.

Doctor Heights moved closer to Alicia and injected her with the serum. After he finished injecting her with the serum, he stopped to look at her on her hospital bed. Although he knew that she could not hear him through her medically induced coma, he went on to say.

 

“Alicia, this serum should help you stay awake” he said. “Alicia, I hope you will be able to do this” he said. “All you have to do is set up this machine. This machine is coded to your DNA.” He continued. “Should the reversal process fail Alicia, you have to use the time portal to return back to warn General Lee not to go through with the Z project.”

 

Doctor Hicks turned away from Alicia and walked out of the room. He continued to work on the reversal project which was meant to disseminate an anti-vaccine spray into the atmosphere. He also created the time portal that was meant to be the backup plan should reversal project fail. In order for the serum to be fully effective, it needed to be incubated for two years. After putting the serum into the incubator. Dr. Lee decided to recorder a hologram to give these precise instructions to Alicia but his body gave out before he could pass along the message.

The year 2022, Alicia wondered aloud. She continued to wonder why she could not remember the last seven years of her life. In leaving the hospital, Alicia decided to sit on a bench not too far from the hospital. In an attempt to regain her bearing, she tried to remember the last memory she had before waking up in the year 2022. The last thing Alicia could remember was a conversation she had with her parent.

 

“Alicia, honey,” Mrs. Pierce said. “What do you know about the Z project.”

 

“I know the government set up the release of this virus in order to combat global warming” Alicia said. “Since the virus breakdown the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide found in the atmosphere until a stable point, that would mean more oxygen is added to the atmosphere.”

 

“Yes, sweetheart, that is correct” Mr. Pierce said. “Since too much oxygen is the human body can half our life span, the government created a vaccine which helps to transport H2 into the body and when combined with O2 it can lead to the creation of more H2O in the body.”

 

“Yes, it one great leap for humanity” Mrs. Pierce said. “The problem that is likely to threaten our future can be stopped now.”

 

“Also, it is great news for all the environmentalist” Alicia interjected.

 

“Yes, that it is,” Mrs. Pierce said. “However great the solution may be, it is bittersweet,” Mrs. Pierced said as her eyes watered.  

 

“Bittersweet, in what way mother,” Alicia said.

 

“Sweetheart, it turns out that your body will not take well to the vaccine” Mr. Pierce said. “The government is not going to halt the Z project till we figure out how to help you,” Mr. Pierce continued.

 

“Sweetheart, the only way to save you is for you to go through the emergency intervention program” Mrs. Pierced said.

 

The memory ended as Alicia tried to remember what the emergency intervention program was. All she could remember about the program was her mother saying that they were going to put her in a medically induced coma that way they can control how much oxygen is passed through her body. She started to realize that was the reason why she had no memory of her life from age 15 to 22. The only memory that she had were the dreams that she had while in a sleep state. She could not help but to pay attention to one particular dream about a man giving her a set of instructions. When she focalized on that dream, she realized the voice sounded similar to doctor Heights voice.  She decided to follow these instructions. She knew that the one place this machine would be would be where the Z project first started. The military base. So, she headed there.

When she got to the base, she saw the pods lined up with all the bodies. She was sure that there were millions of pods just like this all around the world. She further wondered if her parents are in one of these pods. In thinking of her parents, she started to realize the gravity of her mission. She continued to look for the machine and she found it in General lee’s office. She started to look for a way to operate the machine. She could find no button to push nor a way to operate the machine. However, when she touched the machine, it started up, giving her precise instructions on how to set up the machine.

 

“Hello Alicia Pierce.” The machine started. “All you have to is connected the wires to its color-coded port. Should the machine work, the pods will open, releasing humanity from it slumber” the machine continued.

 

Alicia started to plug the wires in and when she was done, the pods failed to open. She began to cry. She could not figure out how to save her parents, let alone the whole of humanity. While she sat on the fall crying, she remembered the words her mother said to her.

 

“Alicia, you hold all the strength in the world. Baby girl, with that immense strength, you can accomplish anything,” she remembered her mother saying.

 

In remembering this, Alicia started to wipe her tears and recollected herself. Then, she started to draw on the words that Dr. Heights said to her while she was in the coma. By now, she realized that his words were not a dream but words that broke into her consciousness. She vaguely remembered Dr. Heights saying that there was a time portal. She continued to search for the time portal. She found it in the heart of the military base. She remembered saying to her that the portal looked like a milky way galaxy. She set the year for 2013 and arrived on planet earth in the year 2013. She then set out to find General lee.

It was in my office that Alicia told me her story. After hearing her story, I decided against the Z project. Hence why, humanity has never heard of the Z project.
