A Declaration

We always knew I was crazy
And oftentimes I was crazy about you
We always knew I was a writer
And oftentimes I wrote about you
Today I caught my breath at a gasp
Tracing back the steps of my pen
Having forgotten that sweet beginning
Of a muse that was always more
Because he was a friend
I want you to remember
That no matter where my pen might wander
It is here where it comes to rest
Here where I am content
Past declarations must be celebrated now, like when
I said it whilst I cried, or stated it after my mom had died
And once or twice over the phone when it dawned on me in an instant
Quite without incident
So here it stands again in a poem
As lovely and full as you are
Not just an abstract minimum
But an infinite equivalent
Of all that words can carry
Sober and not muffled up
No glory sought by the words for their own sake
This is a song, an ode and a lament
I will honor your wishes
And pay tribute to you thus
You have had more effect than the moon and the stars
I have lain in your arms
Succumbed to all your charms
Slowly but surely gotten over my qualms
You set me in motion
To you I would swear the deepest of devotion
For you I would find the words that don’t exist
To affix them a meaning indescribably magnificent
Just to say how I feel in your presence.
If you were ever deficient, I never saw it
If you deceived me, I never bore it.
You are, by far
The most wonderful part of a life lived by a heart that has been scarred
So I repeat
To capture it quite on its own
How much of my soul is invested in yours
Almost as if I had known you from the time you were on all fours
Promise me you will be great and
As I always do
I will write and hence always remember you
For you are the ink and thus the lifeblood of all my stanzas
My heart had called and yours was the one that answered
To you I became enamored
And would have gone as far as to put it on a banner
So that If need ever came I would
Dust off the ragged words and polish them clean
Marvel once more at the finished sheen
And for the hundredth time declare
That if I never said it right or thought it through
Here it stands once again anew
Me saying,
I love you.
