we pretend to be civil
to make it easier on ourselves

we put the price on stamps, we arrange
our silverware correctly, we pick out the
right curtains to match the decor, we say
everything is fine when, in fact, the ceiling
is caving in on us, when we're in the center
of the ring of fire, when we're on the verge

and even then, we don't admit it
because keeping a stern grip on the
harsh secrets and dragging them to the
grave is easier than admitting the pure foolishness
of them. so when the world is screaming
of its impurities, its sins,
we push in our ear buds and
ignore the truth
