The next morning, I got up at nine o' clock and was heading out the door by ten.
Larry and Lisa couldn't seem to understand that it was a day out just me and May. They couldn't understand why they couldn't come as well.
"It's not fair," whined Lisa. "How come you get a day out, and we have to stay in and look after Dad?"
The night before, Gerry had stumbled home, not looking or feeling too good. I insisted he yake the day off work, to nurse his sick head. He then pointed it was his day off anyway. And then I asked him if it would be OK for him to look after the kids while I went off gallivanting. He wouldn't do much looking after, seeing as he'll be in bed most of the day; it'll be like Larry and Lisa would be looking after him. But I didn't care, just as long as I got to spend the day with May, just us two.
I left the kids whinging at the door, said goodbye to them and left. They didn't even say anything like: "goodbye, have a nice time!" or anything like that. As I turned to shut the door; smiled and waved at them, joyfully, they scowled at me.
I arrived at May's and beeped my horn. May came out a few minutes later, looking flustered. As she got in the car, she breathed out slowly
"I've only just now managed to find a babysitter at the last minute," she said. "And Lauren wasn't happy about me going out, you see. She was hoping to have a couple of friends over, but I hate the thought of friends being there when I'm not! I have to be responsible for them even though I'm not there. She wouldn't even say goodbye just now!"
I laughed. "My lot gave me evils as I headed out the door," I said, as I revved up the engine.
"Where are we going?"
"Where do you want to go?" I answered.
"Well, let's go all over the place. It's really boring going just the one place all day."
We drove around for about half an hour, deciding where to stop. At last, we found a cute little statly garden, which looked as if it might be open to the public. In front of the gates, at a desk, there sat a bored-looking, silver-haired man. To the right of him, there was a quaint little car park, which we drove up to and parked.
"Excuse me!" I breathlessly asked the man, as we ran up to him. "Is this place open to the public?"
"Yes," he answered, looking at us. "It will be ten pounds for the two of you."
May and I fished out a fiver each, and handed them to the attendant. He got up off his seat, taking out a key from his back pocket, and, unlocking the gate, waved us in.
We said thanks, and began our tour of the gardens.
It was quite a big garden. We started on a grassy path, which soon led us for about an hour to quite a pretty wood, full of pink flowers, conifers, and two or three benches so that people could sit and take a break.
May and I sat down gratefully on a bench, and began to talk:
"I'm so glad you offered to take me out for the day, Sarah," May told me.
"Why?"
"Well, last night, being Valentine's, I felt lonely. Of course, Lauren doesn't understand. she was all like, 'how can you be lonely, you've got me.' But this is a different type of loneliness. Since I ran out on Tom, I've been hoping I'd meet someone else. Someone who appreciates me, and loves me properly. Someone who'll treat me right; the way Tom never did."
"Don't worry, there's someone out there for you," I reassured her.
"But that's just, I don't think there is. The other night... When we kissed, it felt right, it felt like I was with someone who'll keep me safe."
I felt a knot in the pit of my stomach. "That's how I felt as well," I said.
We sat and looked at the pink flowers for a long time.
"I just wish I will meet Mr Right," May mused.
"You will," I said. "There's someone special out there, for all of us."
"I think I've met her already," May said.
It took a while for me to realize what she said. And meant.
I looked at her. "Oh, May," I cried out. "You know that kiss was just a one-off. It didn't mean anything. Anyway, we've both got kids. And I've got a husband."
"I know. It's wrong of me really, but I think I love you."
I sat there for a furthur five minutes, the words resounding round my head. "I love you. I love you. Ilove you..." Til I couldn't take anymore.
"I love you too, May," I heard myself answering. "But we've got families to think of. We both do."
May looked at me, tears stinging her face. I've never noticed before, but suddenly I realized that she looked even prettier.
She had lovely blonde hair, which she'd crimped recently, and a perfectly chiselled face, she looked a lot like Keira Knightley, but with blonde hair.
"I think you look pretty," I said.
"So are you," said she.
Everything went silent. We smiled at each ther. And then suddenly, I was having the best day off my life...
