In My Father's Eyes

I am more than a spark
ignition of momentary vim
folly from midsummer's lark
detritus of a dilettante whim
More than a temporary burst
or burn of unintentional hearts
a thoughtless provocative curse
an accidental confluence of parts
Envisioned by love and his grace
Consumptive devourer of his thoughts
I haunt with my eyes and my face
as the treasure my father begot
Yet heedless I walk as I will
My portion's expanse I forgot
Till depleted I meet my life's bill
Consider the debt that I've wrought
I stand on my own bleeding feet
soul trampled, I cower from his rage
But deep from his arms warm and sweet
flows freedom, not a penitent's cage
No mountain of menace condemns
No river of regret rends apart
A bond that is blood borne defends
the ache from a dad's loving heart
