Unless You Say

Unless you say
I will not know your pain
For I am human not omnipotent
Unless you allow me to enter your world
I will only see the anger
Not the reason behind it
For I am not like ‘them’
If you one up rather than compare
I will never get to know you
Only the shadow that hides your light
These memories are dark things
That wrap you up in a blanket of forgetfulness
That come when least expected
Like the burst banks of a river
But Canute like we try
To hold it together
Rather than accepting
Allowing
Being
The slap is still a strike
The explosion still a blast
Planning is the key
To avoid such experiences
Love understands
But people are people
They are weak flesh
That will fail you at some point
Expect this and love them anyway
Let them hold your hand for a time
Keep that memory when the fear rises
Use it as a way back
A constant star in your heaven of confusion
And when the waters subside
The boat will settle
The shore will be reached
The welcoming party will be there
Because you allowed someone to share your pain
And survived the telling
