Thrift

In retrospect, the sweater was a poor choice.
Looking down, the snags emerge unbalanced
here and there and everywhere.
Parasitic pilling clings to its fabric host;
welling up in armpits, up and down
sleeves that bell out from the elbow.
The collar, a mismatch of cloth,
hugs to the tenderness of perspiring necks.
Jutting asymmetrically, the hem kisses
both above and well below the waist.
What once was a bright cheerful cherry,
That accentuated curves and invited looks
has transformed into a muted, disappointing mauve
obscuring as it depresses all who look upon it.
