Doh!

Many years ago
I asked myself a seeming simple question -
Did I do this?
By 'this' I meant did I create the world
or play a major part in its creation.
I didn't mean this in a metaphysical or philosophical way,
I meant the 'real' world not the copy -
not the small reflection of it
I carry around in my head.
It might seem like a silly question
but it seemed important at the time.
It took me quite a while -
I wanted to be sure -
but in the end...
I decided it was far too beautiful,
complex
and just plain
unexpected
to be any creation of mine...
or of anyone else I could think of.
I am not always happy,
the world doesn't always seem full of sunshine,
sweet singing feathered friends etc.
but I am grateful!
I'm not sure who did it,
maybe, just maybe,
no one did.
But I'm willing to give God the benefit of the doubt
because, as I said before -
I'm sure it wasn't me or mine...
and - it is beautiful,
breath-takingly beautiful
and awesome,
and God doesn't seem to ask for
much in return.
At least it is beautiful where man hasn't interferred,
chopped all the trees down,
covered it in tarmac and brick,
filled it with noisy menacing machines,
painted the air black or
poisoned the water and
polluted it so badly that
dead creatures litter the landscape.
I don't know for sure who made the world
but I do know who made it
the way it is today.
If I'm right and God was the Creator -
I can't think He will be best pleased.
We have taken a lovely garden
and turned it into a scrapyard -
and called this process progress.
So I'm writing this in the hope
that one or two of the people
who read it
might see what I mean
and tell their friends.
The Earth is not ours
to do with as we will -
if it belongs to any,
then it belongs to all :
All of God's creatures.
It's still not too late -
let's STOP and think before it is!
What more do we need?
MUST we rape the Earth to get it?
What will we leave for our children
and, perhaps more important,
what will we have them believe?
