The Girl Around the Corner
I knew an honest Essex girl who tilled the family soil.
Each day rose and each day set
And every one the same
Her labours endless, her chance of leisure foiled.
I knew an honest Essex girl who only wanted to be loved.
Her give was endlessly taken
And never given back
A smile and a hug was all it took to fuel her empty tank.
But the fields of home were barren laid
And love in short supply.
So with battered heart and fragile soul
She began an endless quest to find a place to rest.
Boxer's only answer was for greater sweat.
And honest Essex girl did try the same.
She bore the tasks of many to hide her aching heart.
She found a shallow comfort in never taking rest.
She travelled the byways turning every stone
One would sure reveal her answer
And solve the riddle of her missing peace.
Too proud to stop and ask the answer, she stumbled ever on.
I knew an honest Essex girl, who unbeknown to her
Had carried the truth inside her
The key that opened a door was only hers to twist.
And finally she found it and gave the rusty lock a turn.
The next page of her story is unwritten
And only she can scribe it.
But that's the secret- don't you see?
She's found the power to write it.
