Free Spirit
A Free Spirit stirred within my soul
Yet unborn, it grew hushed, unseen
A voice said, "I have to be me"
I saw my clouded destiny begin to take it's form
My initiation went quite well
I roamed amongst my newfound friends
We all began to climb the tree
The sweet angelic, soothing voice cooed supportively
Darker times lay ahead unseen
The brutes began to mock my dream
Each sparkling joy was tainted
The playground rules were harsh indeed
The teachers too, they seemed to change
Play became a treasured reward
Often snatched from my feeble grasp
My lonely playtimes catching up
Why could Smoothie Samantha read?
What secret spell had cast her fate?
My wand blundered midst the graphic maze
It must be me who is at fault
Lazy, tired and disruptive I
Bore scorn and ridicule both the same
My nightmare dream lay shipwrecked now
I found another piper's tune
Bottom of the Literary pile
I festered, unseen, unloved yet-
My dream would not be fashioned so
My spirit fought to triumph still
The letters danced before my eyes
A coded message went unsolved
I cried a lonely, salty tear
Anger, rage hid my secret fears
Some folks even now condemn me
"Won't even try to make the grade.
Nothing becomes of dreaming boys
Aimless, drifting worthless will he be."
Free spirit forever unseen
Burdened, shackled by standard norm
He will never shine if he conforms.
