the shadow creases

on a girl's inner arm
are not enough,

he travels
slothfully

through books
with indellible pen

jokes his finger
through seams of sugar bags,

enjoys adding extra shape
to teaspoons in cafes

kicking plasterboard
and burning out wasps,

he punctures oranges
picks off prices

peels off skin
in tandem with routine,

he finds these paltry
actions plucked

with pickled fingers
keep his mind and other small surfaces safe.
