I'll buy you a handbag and matching shoes

I remember a time when I couldn't find you, no matter how hard I tried,
when I couldn't pretend to know you, or let you know when or where I cried.
It changed when you stopped teaching, and we started to spend more time,
now I am older I often desire, to pop in for a chat and some wine.
For the first time ever I sided with you, last year when Dad was ill,
I stood next to you to keep you strong, and found a gap to fill.
You've watched me grow and blossom, and now you've seen me flower,
you knew when to garden, and when to stand back, and when to be a bower.
Did you become more like me? Or I grew more like you?
You've taught me a lot of things but I hope, I've opened your eyes up too.
You've come to know an adult being, I can feel your respect and pride,
and I respect the years you spent a-freeing, and in you I can now confide.
You've grown a lot more liberal minded, and though you still know best,
You've learnt to trust my own decision, and let me get myself dressed.
Once, you noted I always accessorize, whilst you always forgot,
I'll buy you the jewellry, bags and shoes, from the babe that you begot.
The greatest gift you gave to me, your old dictionary and thesaurus,
two books full to the brim with words, have bid us speak in chorus.
You don't need a hat mum, to make you rise above,
but I'll buy you a handbag with matching shoes,
and fill them full of love.x
