A couple of weeks ago I happened to watch a TV program about alien abduction. People who truly believed they had been abducted were hypnotised and regressed so that they could re-live the experience.
The thing that struck me most was the feelings of fear, terror and
vulnerability that their memories elicited. It was difficult to watch
and, even more so, to listen to the description of cold aliens
inspecting and probing... The bright lights, the cold unfriendly surroundings, the strangers in their alien garb - doing things...
A few days later I happened to turn on the TV in the middle of a TV movie or something or other. I was about to try a different channel when I noticed a multi-segmented light source hung from a ceiling in a bright, white, sterile looking room.
It reminded me immediately of the description given by the people who had been abducted... There were several masked figures in strange green apparel and they seemed to be callously probing a baby human. The baby was crying, it obviously wanted its mother but more than that it needed comfort and found nothing but aliens, scientific curiosity and cold professionalism.
I was again reminded of the alien abductees...
The terror the vulnerability, the fear of suddenly finding yourself in strange harsh surrounding, being examined by fearsome creatures, the blinding light, the noise of the machinery....
I wondered if mid-wives would ever come back into fashion.
Of course UK hospitals might be different....
