I rose at 5.45 am and went to Mass at 6.30 am at the nearby
church.
I hurried back to the Grande et Moderne Hotel and we both carried our
luggage to the Savoia from
where it was to be collected. A coach took us to the station where we
had to wait about three quarters
of an hour before the train left.
On the way to Modane we stopped at Genova and Torino. A lady who was in
our group at the Pensione
Gerber took a photograph of the group on the platform of the station.
At Modane there was a long stop
for a passport examination. It was almost dark by the time we reached
the lake at Aix-le Bains. The
refection of the setting sun on the snow-covered mountains is very
lovely.
Margaret and I were in third class carriages for the return journey.
Having been in second-class on the
way out, we noticed the difference.
Dinner on the train was at 10 o'clock. It took place in five sittings
as there were so many people to be
served.
