Life’s Humourless Joke

A sentence begun yet never finished…
At least not by your voice,
your eyes flashed the message though
as if they had no choice.
They were always soft and lucid;
they said you felt it too
but with our lives aligned to others
there was nothing we could do.
For people like us
there was no other way.
We had to go on shooting straight
it was the only way to play.
Sometimes it got so difficult
if your hand brushed my arm;
a frisson darting through us
causing sweet alarm.
The softly spoken Irish brogue
the twinkle in your eye;
the brogue harsh, twinkle dulled
that day we said goodbye.
Today when I remember
my heart lies frozen in my breast.
My life a loveless jape;
your joke was barbed, so cruel Sir Jest….
