The secret

There is a story. It has been kept secret since first it was written. Nobody knows of its existence, and yet, it has yet to be locked away or hidden. That is the beauty of this story: it is a secret held public.
Usually, when whispers of a mystery enter the human mind, everyone begins to wonder about it. They ask themselves and everyone else around them what it is, where it comes from, and who brought it. But because this secret was held out to them at arm’s reach, they think: “Well, that’s no secret.” and they walk past it. They believe they already know what it is, but really, they know nothing of what it contains. That is why this story is the most wonderful. Nobody knows how it will turn out.
There is only one kind of person who ever pays conscious attention to the story, and who has ever unlocked its ending. Some were mind-blowing happy, whilst others were sorely disappointed. But let us not dwell on their differences and merely express what they all have in common. They are the dead.
Indeed, when Death finally catches up to you, it tells you about the undisclosed. It begins to read you the story, only stopping close to the very end. It makes you curious of the tale, and abnormally needy for what it could contain. It makes you strive for the answer, beg for the solution. However, no matter how long you struggle in search of the mysterious, in the end, Death always closes its mouth and smiles. It will not let you have it so easily. But perhaps a trade could be in order.
Will you trade your life for the ending of the story?
A great number of people say ‘yes’. They are at such a point of interest that all sacrifices would be nothing compared to the end of the clandestine. They would gladly forgo their lives in exchange for such a treasure.
Others, perhaps more knowing, say ‘no, thank you’, and they simply walk away, leaving Death scratching his head, wondering how they could ever resist temptation. These are the wise men, the wise women. They, when Death only began to read the story, knew immediately what the secret was, where it had come from, and to whom it belonged to. They knew, therefore, that they needn’t know the answer until much further in life, when the story was much longer.
