"The Jacknives are a five piece band much in the mould of bands of
the sixties. They don't like to compare themselves to anyone band but
cite many influences in their music including 1965 - 68 American Garage
Punk, Ray Davies, the Who, the Velvet Underground and some of the late
70s New wave bands such as the Jam and the Clash.
The lead singer is Erin Kline, aged 22, from North London. Erin studied
at Art School but got bored and dropped out. She sounds like Debbie
Harry but refuses to acknowledge this. She sings a majority of the
songs but sometimes duets with the leader of the band Jack Caspar. Erin
has raven hair and was born in Ireland.
Jack Caspar is the rhythm guitarist and chief song smith. Jack is a lot
older than the rest of the band, in his thirties, but has been taking
rejuvenation therapy so he says. Jack has played in various bands but
the Jacknives is his first serious band. Jack has fair hair and is
shortsighted.
Ham Bone plays the lead guitar, thinks Hendrix is a superhero and loves
eating. He is quite chunky but says that his weight is a matter of
opinion between himself and Hendrix. Ham used to play in the Gyres till
they broke up last year after the drummer started going out with the
girl who played the keyboards. Ham was previously going out with the
same girl and expresses his bitterness at times by flinging his guitar
about like Pete Townshend. Ham is 26.
Joe Drury is the bassist and provides the glue that keeps the band
together. He is just 20 the youngest of the group and hopes that soon
his mum and dad will be back together again. Joe has raven hair like
Erin but insists that is just a coincidence.
Tonic Jones was a mod before he was anything else, he is 21 and a big
fan of Keith Moon. His nickname comes from his habit of wearing Tonic
mohair suits when going out. The rest of the band wear black sweaters,
jeans and leather jackets, and define their look as Out Of Time. On
stage, Tonic wears a black button down shirt and white Levis.
The album opens with the Jacknives new single "Real Friends" which is
an uptempo number with a curious riff. It is quickly followed by
material from their live set including "Girl", "Without You", "In The
Street" and a host of other songs which have formed the backbone of
their live set. They also sing love songs and Jack and Erin duet on
"Rainbow", "Friends" and the key song of the album "Out Of Time". While
other bands scream their fury about the modern world, the Jacknives
sing what they damn well please and in doing so maybe change people's
ideas about what life is all about. They hope so anyway.
You don't have to buy this album, but if you do and you like it, then
maybe it will acquire meaning for you over time. Play it loud!
