Why Cry?

Why cry? Now it's Autumn
and leaves are falling
copiously as tears.
Tears will stain the book;
ink will run and all
my thoughts will be undone.
Why cry? Outside
clouds rush by,
hurrying and scurrying
across vast plains,
chasing their tails.
Why cry? Who to catch
the sobbing here?
Where wild winds howl,
toss debris, fling detritus
whirling like dervishes,
to settle elsewhere.
Why cry? Stars
bright as they are,
are no solace. Pick
one, pick any, stars
shine only for themselves.
Why cry? Why weep
a lake? Such plaints
and lamentations keen
to be unheard, unseen.
Where the embrace
to cradle? Where the heart?
The beat will be the comfort,
be the mark, the register.
Why cry? I seek the heart
to wonder why.
