Xmas Inspiration Point (Chiller Thriller)

Beth loved to have a fresh turkey for Christmas dinner; the trouble
was they were so expensive!
So she usually went to the supermarket late on Christmas Eve to pick up
a reduced-price one. This year, however, she was having difficulty; it
was closing time, there were five fresh chilled turkeys still unsold,
and the store was making no effort to reduce their price.
"Will all remaining customers please make their way to the checkouts
as the store is now closing," ordered a nasal voice. That did it!
Making sure nobody was looking, Beth vaulted the empty deli counter and
crouched under the overhanging shelf. She considered herself to be
honest and did not really want to steal, but the store had left her no
alternative; when everyone had gone she would creep out, select the
best turkey and use the emergency exit; by the time the police arrived
she would be gone.
"Oh, blast! We forgot to reduce those turkeys!" exclaimed a voice
nearby.
"It's too late now," replied another, "I'll ditch them early on
Friday."
The voices faded, the main store lights clicked off followed by the
sound of a heavy door being locked, then silence.
Give it five more minutes and the turkey's mine, thought Beth.
But only a couple of minutes had passed before she heard a soft flump.
Then another. Please let it not be rats, begged Beth, shrinking in
fright. It wasn't rats; it was worse.
Beth peered out from under the deli counter to see the five turkeys
surrounding her. They had been plucked, chilled and trussed up only to
be left to rot over Christmas.
Ten angry eyes swivelled towards her and five sharp beaks opened in
unison.
And Beth realised that it wasn't only in space that no one can hear you
scream.
