The Wish

One day as I walked along the beach,
A glittering, shiny object caught my eye
Buried in the sand, almost out of reach,
Laid a bottle, waiting for someone, to pass by
I dug it up from the wet, compacted sand,
And began to brush the sand away
But as the bottle was brushed by my hand,
Smoke arose in the light of day
A genie appeared at the top of the cloud,
And he scared me nearly to death
He was boisterous, his voice was loud,
Yet pleasant was the smell of his breath
He asked who awakened him from his sleep
And I was the only one there
Sternly, I replied, yet my fear ran deep,
"It was I", as the wind rippled my hair
Silence for a moment which seemed like an hour,
Then a scowl was replaced with a grin
I could tell he was blessed with immense power,
And I wondered where had he been
"Thank you", he said, "For setting me free",
"I am indeed, indebted to you"
"For your kindness, I have a wish for you",
"Tell me what you want me to do"
"A wish?" I replied, "Whatever do you mean?",
"Anything that I want, is mine?"
"Yes", he said, "But be fresh thoughtful and keen",
"For you only get this, one time"
A wish, oh my, what a dilemma I was in,
If you could have anything, what would it be
So many things, I knew not where to begin,
I could just wish and it'll be given to me
I thought of money, more than I could spend,
I thought of greatness, fortune, and fame
I thought of a life that would never end,
What it would be like to have a famous name
But with my wish, there are those that will say,
I wasted my chance, but I knew
That all I wanted, was just one more day,
And that you'd love me, as I do you
