Today was Ozella Onion's Seed-Day. Ozella Onion should have been
happy. But she wasn't, she was very sad. She was sad, because she had
lost her tears. She had never stopped crying until today. Ozella Onion
cried when she was happy. She cried when she was sad. She made all the
Fruit and Veggie Kids cry. They didn't mind. They loved Ozella
Onion.
Ozella Onion wandered around the garden. She was looking for her tears.
She met Kelly Carrot.
"Happy Seed-Day, Ozella Onion," said Kelly Carrot. "Why are you so sad?
And where are your tears?"
"I&;#8230;I don't know," replied Ozella Onion. "I've lost them. Will
you help me find them? Please."
"Of course I will," said Kelly Carrot.
Ozella Onion and Kelly Carrot wandered around the garden looking for
the lost tears. After awhile they met Robbie Runner Bean and Lettie
Lettuce.
"Happy Seed-Day," greeted Lettie Lettuce and Robbie Runner Bean.
"Hello," sniffed a dry eyed Ozella Onion.
Lettie Lettuce looked up at Ozella Onion. "Why are you sad?" she
asked.
"I've lost my tears, and I can't find them. Have you seen them?"
Lettie Lettuce and Robbie Runner Bean looked at each other. "No," they
both answered together.
Robbie Runner Bean put up his fists. "Tell me who's stolen them and
I'll get them back for you," he said.
Ozella Onion was sure that no one had stolen her tears. She was sure
that she had lost them. She looked at Robbie Runner Bean, Lettie
Lettuce and Kelly Carrot. "I'm sure that I have just lost them. You see
I had them last night when I went to bed. But when I awoke this morning
they were gone."
"Mmmmm," said Lettie Lettuce thoughtfully. She walked around Ozella
Onion. "When you woke up this morning, were you lying in the sunshine?"
she asked.
"Yes, I was. But how did you know that?" asked a puzzled Ozella
Onion.
" I think the sun has dried up all of your tears. I think that's where
they have gone," answered Lettie Lettuce.
Ozella Onion would have cried if she could. She was feeling very sad
now. "What good is an onion without tears?" sniffed Ozella Onion.
"Wait a minute," shouted Kelly Carrot. "I have an idea. Come with
me."
Ozella Onion, Lettie Lettuce and Robbie Runner Bean followed Kelly
Carrot. She led them to the bottom of the stairs of the Fruit and
Veggie house. She told Ozella Onion to stand still and wait. Ozella
Onion did as she was told.
Ozella waited and she waited. Then she gasped as a shower of cold water
poured over her. She looked up. It was Willie Watering Can. He was
tipping his water all over her.
As the water soaked Ozella Onion she could feel her tears coming back,
slowly at first. Before long there was two puddles on the grass. Robbie
Runner Bean, Lettie Lettuce and Kelly Carrot smiled happily as they
watched Ozella Onion cry her eyes out.
"Thank you," sobbed Ozella Onion.
Kelly Carrot warned Ozella Onion not to stay out in the sun too long
again.
"I won't," promised Ozella Onion.
Kelly Carrot, Robbie Runner Bean, Lettie Lettuce and Willie Watering
Can started to sing to Ozella Onion.
"HAPPY SEED-DAY TO YOU, HAPPY SEED-DAY TO YOU, HAPPY SEED-DAY OZELLA
ONION, HAPPY SEED-DAY TO YOU."
Ozella Onion wiped away her tears. "Thank you," she said.
"Come on," said Lettie lettuce. "It's time for your Seed-Day
party."
They all happily climbed the stairs of the Fruit and Veggie house for
the Seed-Day tea.
