My Darling Clementine
By beautiful oblivion
- 1294 reads
The wind of the night howled through the trees and nipped at the back of Clementine’s neck as she walked. Strange noises surrounded her, glowing eyes followed her every move. Clementine picked up her pace, eager to be out of these haunting woods. Stories of horror, death, and deception made her wary of being in her longer than needed.
Clementine heard something from behind her. A limb breaking? A soft moan perhaps? Suddenly conscious of watching eyes, Clementine turned slowly, hoping to see a small cat, or something helpless. What she saw frightened her more than it should have. Looking back from where she had just come, Clementine saw leaves, trees, and the occasional twig lying on the sot earth. No animals. No strange glowing light. No ghost floating in midair. For some reason, this observation made her uneasy and she longed for light.
Walking forward again, Clementine became aware of the temperature dropping slightly each second. She began to see her breath in front of her. Goosebumps covered her arms, and her teeth clattered from the cold wind. And she had that sinking feeling she was being watched again.
There! Up ahead! Light; the end of the woods. Warmth. Happiness. Safety. Clementine began to walk faster. As she got closer to the end, she heard a familiar sound. A soft moan. A whisper in the wind. What was it saying?
“Clementine.”
The closer she got to the light, the more moaning she heard.
“Clementine.”
One hundred feet to go.
“Clementine.”
She ran.
“Clementine.” The voice was louder now.
Fifty feet.
“Clementine.” It sounded close.
Twenty five feet Clementine could practically see the people in the nearby town.
Five more feet.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One. There!
Clementine could actually feel the warmth on her face. But also the chill on her back.
“Clementine!”
An icy hand grabbed her shoulder and tightened. Clementine let out a blood curling scream, catching people’s attentions seconds before everything went black.
Forever.
