Held tight in Lady's hand
a key the shape of Spain
to a walk-in wardrobe that the critics had said was jammed
shut after it had swollen in heavy rain.
No-one could remember what had been behind the door
which is a shame
because it was full, from floor
to ceiling with pleasantries, compliments
and more.
Lady had spent
her life-savings on the key. She massaged a swollen gland
behind her left ear
and then unlocked the door. She leant
inwards; the wardrobe was empty but Lady could hear
voices. They addressed her as my dear,
told her she looked grand.
Lady locked the door behind her and took a bow. The wardrobe
cheered.
