If Religion Could Give Up Sex

Wouldn't it be fun if religion could give up sex
perhaps just for Lent or Ramadan to begin with
try out
losing the addiction to its
endless busying , peering, clucking,
beating
shave this, cut that, wear this ,never do that
it is all
as prurient as any mac flasher hiding a mag
delves mostly into uteri
as if trying to climb back in
takes minds off the really big things
narrows the gaze
keeps everyone too busy
as if sex was the cause of anything
when it is just an appetite
just human
quite ordinary
and often connected to love
I supposed that would leave religion
just with
violence to deal with
and matters of spirit
it might feel underemployed
it might need a method of owning
something else
