Solar Flair

The sun has always had
flair
It used to traverse the sky in a barge
with Ra and Horus paddling wildly
trying to stay unmoved
or it shone out of Sekhmet's lion eyes at night
as she prowled an Indigo sky

In Europe the sun bulled about in a chariot
but often with a woman driving
Germany's Frau Sunne
became sunny on a Sunday

and later Jesus had a halo
religions always
soaked up to raise up their own new ideas
Lundy is supposed to be Avalon
also an island of the old Gods

Suppose they were all right
The peoples of Sumer
China, and Africa
the Aztecs ,Hindus ,and Buddhists
the people admonished by
St Patrick ,St Eligius
and Canute
suppose we should be thanking
the sun when she turns up for work
in the morning
and banishes grey
her timekeeping is after all
excellent

over all the sun has been a she
not a he
we were blinded by Egypt and Rome
but their stories are not all there is
if a flounce of her skirts
throws a veil of storms
at our puny metal satellites
we will remember
how cold it is in the dark

Aurora Borealis is so beautiful
they gush
but it might actually be
a sulking maternal
