Words Again

There are words in my head again today.
Old friends I fall upon with open arms,
who sit with me as they always did
and talk to me of the old times
when the lamplighter walked up Nottingham Road
and Bristol was singing with trams.
So up the street I go.
And here they come, walking along beside me,
filling the air like angels,
making the sunshine bright,
saying here and now and for ever
and far, far in the distance,
the sound of a train
on the track.
More words, they say,
coming your way,
filling the carriages like soldiers home from war,
for words are endless.
Words will never stop.
They will come back.
Then with a promise
They are gone.
And here I am,
trying to remember
the lamplighter
and the singing trams.
and the hope of the train in the distance.
