Rain
A breath of it waits
duning in dust-bowl calm
as the atmosphere
in an empty room.
The weight of it
too much
breaks the sky's spongy membrane
with a sigh deep as earth
grounds the pollen
and hails the trees
like a dusk-fall mother
calling at suppertime.
No, it is not like tears
not salty sea-borne
bleaching a trace
on cheek-boned slopes
but probing spreads
the rumour about
that there is more to it
than this.
