Moon starvation

Some take gown, most moon-fast.
"some take gown most moon fast" -
Unseparated fridge-magnet words -
Random,
Or my friend's unwitting gift of wisdom,
And a message from the gods?
Some of us go to university.
We beam proudly from photos
On the old folks' walls,
Clasping vital diplomas
That mark our worth
In this rational world,
Of jobs, desktop computers,
And shopping malls -
The only concession to something else,
The gaudy whimsy of the graduation gown.
Bright-eyed rat-racers,
We cast our dreams aside
In the hunt for salary, car and mortgage.
Above all this, the stars shine on in wonder,
And the magic moon passes ignored.
Alas,
Some take gown, most moon-fast.
