Chapter12) Close Encounter
When it had grown dark the Dino took-off, and plunged into the ocean. It immediately performed a shape-shift to a typical Toolian submarine, and ploughed very quickly through the ocean, passing many islands. Sometimes they would sail just under the surface, monitoring for any of the flying-craft. But it wasn't until the next morning, as they reached the mainland that they began registering any activity.
The computer reported: 'The flying-crafts have all taken-off in many directions from one point situated about ten kilometres inland and a hundred and fifty kilometres south from here Captain'
'Good,' said Miniator. How close could we get before Koosian or Mermian scanners could detect the ship?'
'With our Stealth capacity maybe five kilometres, Captain.'
'Then let us wait until evening when all the flying-craft are back at their base -- to avoid visible detection – before we take to land to find a secluded place to begin on foot and by jet-pack.
That evening when the computer reported a cessation of coming and going of the flying-machines, the submarine surfaced just off the coast of the mainland, and shape-shifted back to spaceship mode, and flew six kilometres distant from the Koosnian base, and landed in a small treeless patch of land in the forest.
The next morning over breakfast Swing and Miniator, and with the computer listening-in, began some final planning. They should try to get close enough to the base to film and photograph the situation. Swing should wear his Force Suit, take his Atom Mixer, (effective against both Koosian and Mearian laser-guns), a Guide Compass and Tracking System, which will record everywhere they go, plus a Sound Projector to scare away any of the wild creatures.
Miniator would use his Jet-Pack to go forward and keep in communication with Swing and the ship.
'Our superior technology and animosity,' said Miniator, 'are to our advantage. And the data we collect today could be crucial in stopping the mischief that is being done here.'
'Hi,Captain, the things you have shown me are like miracles! And there's no end to them!'
They set out on foot using their Guide Compass showing their destination. After a couple of kilometres Miniator hovered up with his jet-pack above the trees, but saw nothing to endanger their progress. The computer now and again reported the approaching flying-craft, but each time they passed-over them. The forest, which was very dense in most places, gave them good cover, but it was a very hot day, and the going on foot was slow.
After two more kilometre they came to a plain, and across the plain, on the edge where the forest began again, they could see some silver metal structures, and a large round spaceship supported on four legs. Close to these were several stationary flying-craft. And stood around these were humanoid figures.
Staying out of sight in the trees they took some photographs. And Miniator and began scanning with the Visual Camera in his Computer-Suit, zooming in very close. On its screen they could see that most of the figures were wearing brown uniforms, and had their weapons at the ready, while maybe three or four others were wearing tight fitting silver suits, and seemed to be doing some work on the Flying-Craft. They all had their helmets pushed back on their shoulders. Miniator zoomed in even closer on the faces of the figures. Those in brown uniforms had dark leathery completions, and all had black beards and long black hair. 'Koosians,' reported the computer. While those in the silver suits had very pale faces and were hairless. 'Mearian.'came the computer's response.
Miniator thought they should take a look from the other side. And he was decided that Swing should stay there, and photograph anything that new that happens, while Miniator would make a large circle and come around to the other side of the base. With constant communication with the computer. He would use his Jet-Pack whenever it was deemed safe from the flying-Craft. It would be quicker than both of them going on foot. He would return as soon as possible. 'Fine, Captain!' said Swing! And Miniator left.
Swing lay down between two bushes, and focused his camera, and waited to see what would happen. He had been watching for about half an hour when he suddenly heard a voice from behind him. He automatically rolled over on to his back and drew the the Atom-Mixer from is belt. But he saw nothing. He scrambled to his feet, and pulled down his helmet. He thought about what he had heard... just one word but not in any recognizable language... It had been soft, female...? Could he have imagined it? Then it came again, but now to his left...close, the same word. But he could see nothing. He looked for movement in the bushes, his heart beating fast. Then the voice came again, this time to his right. He spun around, but again there was nothing...the silence and stillness weighed on him. Then again it came from the left, before he could turn again it came again from the right , and then again from the left. Sometimes the voice seemed to echo inside his head. Swing began to panic.
'Who's there?' he asked.
'Then came the voice, from the right, but now sounding mechanical, and spoken in English, 'Oh an Earthling!'
Then from the left, 'Earthling!'
'Who are you?' shouted Swing shifting his head from side to side.
'Me!' came the answer from the left.
'Come out, show yourself! pressed Swing, pointing the Atom-Mixer at the ready.'
'Don't point that thing, it's rude!' came the mechanical reply from the right.
Swing automatically, without knowing why lowered his weapon.
Then the voice said 'Hello!' from behind him.
Swing turned quickly in fear, but again there was no one.
'Then the voice, very close again from behind him whispered 'Hello'
Swing again spun around. And standing very close to him was a beautiful woman. She was hairless, with a pale complexion, and very large blue eyes... she was smiling.
He instantly knew she was a Mearian, She wore the tight fitting silver suits he had seen through his camera. Swing thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. And was speechless. She somehow held his mind, as if it was a small bird nestled in her hands.
'My name is Narea, excuse my voice, it is my translating machine. I do not speak any Earthling languages. I'm sorry I confused you, but I saw you and your strange friend, and didn't know if you would be dangerous.'
Swing still couldn't gather himself together enough to speak. He felt so relaxed.
'You seemed to be spying on those Koosians... I was their prisoner, but two days ago I escaped.' She blinked her eyes and suddenly Swing felt released...
'Sorry,' he muttered, 'My name is Swing Blood, Do you need help? Are those people is silver suits also prisoners?'
'Yes, we are Mermians, our spaceship was captured by those Koosian Pirates.'
At that moment Miniator hovered down beside them.
