We want to kill disabled people
I hope you agree it’s not right that
We pay for broken people
In civilized society.
We must all be self reliant.
It’s scary, unwise to think that
We should help each other through pain
Shouldn’t it be obvious that
Everyone has got problems
We need to better understand
Not just disabled, sick people
Need attention, care and support
There are too many people who
Are desperate for us to help.
They’re disposable, better gone
Millions of people feeling
They’re entitled to life’s basics
Everyone should understand
They can’t depend on anyone
Too many people feeling that
There should be more community
And we should all help each other,
Be kind to people who have less.
There is only one way forward,
Wanting to stop lives of pain
Too many hurting nowadays
It’s time to end their misery.

This poem was inspired by MAID in Canada, and fears of the spread of similar programmes https://jacobin.com/2024/05/canada-euthanasia-poor-disabled-health-care. Liz Carr has spoken about euthenasia and assisted suicide here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvLZIVf0cQ and made this TV show about the issues https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001z8wc
RIP Jennyfer Hatch, who died aged 37. She had the same condition as me (Ehlers Danlso Syndrome) https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/woman-euthanasia-commercial-wanted-... fashion retailer, Simons, made an 'inspirational' video (there's a reason so many disabled people hate that word) of her final days, released the day after Jennyfer was killed - called 'All is Beauty' . This made me feel we are living in a sci-fi dystopia. Others agreed and the advert was, thankfully, pulled from social media (I watched it before it was. It made me cry and feel depressed for a week.) https://www.campaigncanada.ca/article/1855348/backlash-gets-heated-onlin.... It should never have been made. No-one's death should be used to sell clothes. No one should die because they can't afford to live.

There is so much muddled
There is so much muddled compassion. Seems little understanding of how all can go through dark times concerning problems being experienced or disabilities, but with support and love, such times can pass and even experience come of new fulfilling opportunities to serve others. All have much to offer and to be valued. All bear the image of our Maker, though marred by much now, especially our faults. And doctors should not be asked to do other than help pain relief and comfort. Rhiannon
