A diamond geezer

She found a diamond bracelet in the back or the car. Ruth had told me this over drinks that evening. She had chosen the slick new cocktail lounge, perfect for celebrations. Dominic was going to propose, she was certain. The bracelet was the preview- the rock would follow. I shuffled in my seat, nodding in all the right places and reassuring her that her intuition was right.
We had kissed that morning, she thought he was working. Earning the deposit for the dream house they would share in wedded bliss. He'd presented it to me, sparkling diamonds. It must have slipped off that morning, coming loose in our final embrace.
I tried to find the words to tell her, but everytime my mouth could not form the words. My heart beat so fast that I thought I was having palpitations. It would serve me right. We danced around handbags and Ruth told everyone in close proximity about how she was getting hitched. I could see she pitied me, single studio flat.
We stumbled out of the taxi, and I crashed at hers. Dominic was working, and I knew he really meant it, when he said he loved me. I giggled but the smile soon faded as I caught sight of the glitering in the smart suit jacket. Gulping back the tears, I unlatched the door and ran.
