I look at my sister with a raised eye brow. "There, there...c'mon in, into my apartment and tell me all about it." I say sounding motherly.
All she could do is nod. I open the front door of the building and go up the stairs to my apartment. Once inside, I turn and look at my sister with my arms crossed. "Okay, what have you gotten yourself into now?" I ask.
"I...my life hasn't been well...since...since that day. I started doing drugs..."
"What? Do you need my help with that? To get you clean?"
She shakes her head no, "No..I sold everything I own for money for my um...habit. But soon that ran out and I needed more. So I borrowed money from a friend..." She says with as sigh
"Go on," I say.
"The thing is...he is in some sort of mod. But I didn't know that when I borrowed money from him. I found out when it was time to pay him back." She says with another sigh.
"What! I can't believe this! The mob? How much money did you borrow from him?" I ask.
"Fifty...fifty thousand dollars." Sophie says sounding and looking very ashamed.
"What?! That's my yearly salary! And let me guess you came to me, so you can borrow money from to pay him back?" I ask
She shakes her head no again, "No, only to help me get out of the country. I'll go into hiding some where in Europe." She says.
"But...but we just got back into each others lives! It wouldn't be fair, I would like to know where you live, so I can visit." I say as I head toward the kitchen.
"No, it would be too dangerous. In fact I'm putting you in danger now." She says.
"Sophie, I can take care of my self. And besides why would this guy come after me? I don't owe him any money." I say from the kitchen.
"He'll do anything or hurt anyone to get what he wants." Sophie says as she comes into the kitchen.
I'm standing at the stove cooking us a meal. "Who ever this guy is...he better not mess with me. Let's just say I have friends in high places, they would take care of him." I say.
"His name is Dwayne Marco." Sophie says as she sits down at the small brown table, it was in the center of the kitchen.
I nearly dropped the frying pan on the floor. "Not the Dwayne Marco." I say.
She just nods and looks at the floor. As if she expected me to yell. Which she was right about. "Sophie Ann MacAllister! I can't believe you would do such a thing! Him of all people! I can't believe this! Sis, you've made the ultimate stupid mistake." I say as I put my hands on my hips.
Dwayne Marco was the most vicious, cold hearted, vile man and the most famous in the country. He recently, about a year ago, got out of prison. He was in prison for a drug trafficking crime. But of course everyone knows he would have gotten longer, if he hadn't paid the judge a nice sum of bribe money. I still look at my sister in disbelief. "Have you even tried paying any of it back?" I ask as I put our food on plates.
She nods, "Yes, I could only pay fifteen hundred back."
"Okay, that leaves forty-eight thousand, five hundred dollars to go. Wait how did you pay him back, if you used all the money on drugs?" I ask
"I paid it by working...working as a prostitute." She says again looking down at the floor.
This time, I nearly dropped the plates on the floor. "Sophie Ann! I can't believe you! Imagine what mom would say if she was still alive. Think of what dad is going to say about this, when he hears about it!" I say as I put our plates on the table.
"I know...I know...please Leslie, please don't tell dad. I've got enough on my plate as it is." Sophie says with pleading eyes.
I let out sigh, "Fine, I'll leave him out of this." I say and she sighs with relief.
The next morning, before leaving for work, I leave my sister a note. It was telling her where I was. I even put the number, just in case she needed to call me in an emergency. I quietly close the door and begin my journey down the sidewalk. I was hoping my sister would be alright by herself all day. When Sophie awoke, she found the apartment quiet and still. Her thoughts began to race as situations went through her mind, like her sister up and leaving her. No, no! I gotta stop thinking like that. She didn't leave me for good. She isn't like that. She thinks.
Then she finds a small note that was in her sister's hand writing. Hmm...what's this? She thinks as she began to read the note:
Sophie,
I went to work. I'll be home around six'o clock tonight. Feel free to watch the T.V. or take a nice hot shower. Also you can make food too, for lunch and breakfast. If you feel there is an emergency of any kind, please contact me at: 415-662-3252. Remember, that I love you, no matter what you did.
-Leslie
She then quickly shoves the note in her back pocket. She heads over to the window to check for any signs of trouble, like she always did. Seeing nothing, she goes to take a shower. After a thirty minute shower, she goes and checks the window again. In front of the building, a black Cadillac was parked. Her mind starts to race a little. It's probably one of the tenants cars. She thinks. Then four men get out of the car, she of course recognizes them. They were sent after her before. She watches as they head toward the building's entrance. Her mind starts to race faster.
No! They couldn't have found me already! She thinks. I gotta hide, call my sister. She adds to her thoughts as she grabs the phone and runs into a small closet. Shaking, she rips the note out of her pocket and dials the number. Three rings and no one picked up. C'mon! Pick up! Pick up! She thinks as the phone continues to ring.
"Marix Publishing, can I help you?" A female's voice asks.
"Yes, I need to talk to my sister, Leslie MacAllister, it's an emergency!" Sophie says nearly shouting. She knew the men were closer, she could feel it.
"One moment please," The female's voice says.
The phone begins to ring again. C'mon! Please hurry up! Oh God! I'm gonna die! Please! Please! Please pick up Leslie! She thinks frantically. Her breathing increases to where it sounded like she might hyper ventilate. She was shaking so bad, she could barely hold the phone. "Hello?"
"Leslie! He found me! His men are coming after me!" Sophie say frantically.
"Sophie, calm down. Are you sure?"
"Yes, I saw him men outside."
"Just calm down and hide."
"I already did that,"
Then there was a loud banging noise in the back ground. "Okay, Sophie. What the heck is that?"
"That's them, they're breaking in to get me! Please come home, I'm scared. Please, I don't wanna..."
Then Sophie was cut off. There was the sound of a struggle and screaming. Also a lot of crashing noises. And the sound of men's voices too. But the last thing Leslie could hear, was her sister's scream of terror. "Leslie! Help me!" She screams. Then there was another scream of terror, followed by silence.
