Dad

I sat gazing into the fire                                                 
eating bread and butter.                                                      

He came and leant over                                                 
and spat into the flames,                                                             

and I watched it sizzle                                                         
until it had burnt away;

but once he had spat                                                                
he no longer stayed

This captured conveyed memory does crysallize the child's longing for communication, opening of the door to mutual understanding and respect, really knowing him a bit. Which would have helped him somewhat too I expect. Rhiannon

Thank you Rhiannonw. And yes, that is exactly how it was; the issue for that generation was that they had experienced the war (WWII), plus a stricter upbringing. Robert Hayden - 'Those Winter Sundays' describes dad perfectly.
