The Pantheon

So I've banged out a bit of the pantheon of the world that I'm trying to create and as easy as it is to think of a few gods and their dominions here and there, the complication comes from the inital creation of where it all starts.

What came first? The Gods or the universe? And who was the first god.  Those were the first questions to go through my head and it just seemed natural (And cliche, like I said, be prepared for that) that the first god would be defined as some sort of a Mother god.  But who created her? Where did she come from? There's a vagueness that has to come from that otherwise it's a perpetual backspin into the creation of the first atom and there's a certain... bottomless pit that comes with that process so it starts somewhere.  Vauge. But there's a start.  As there is with all stories, there's always a story that preceeds it but where does the author stop looking back?
