Together they run, swiftly passing the miles.
Faultlessly following the path laid before them.
Forever would they travel, but, alas, both are mortal.
Hesitation, a failing, they fall by the wayside.
First, his fear; is she lost, lost forever?
Second, betrayal;
A faithful friend, no longer to be relied upon?
Third, his anger, self doubt; she is gone, he is alone.
Finally, hope; she will return, someday.
Yet, the warmth of this flame,
Too weak to banish solitude’s cold grip.
He shivers, a feint smile, and waits.

If you hadn't explained it in your intro, I would have read this differently. Sometimes, I think it is best to let the words speak to the readers for themselves....
